Nuggets!

Wow, it's been over a week (almost 2) since I last posted. Does that give you any idea on how busy I have been?

PS: I'm calling this "Nuggets" because we are making home-made chicken nuggets for CJ tonight! YAY!

I won't go into too many finer details, but here's the rundown of the past few weeks:
Personal:

  • Best News: I'm on Google+! I've been waiting forever for a friend to send me an invite, and I finally got one! YAY!(?)

  • 2nd Best News: Netflix has all of the Star Trek Series on Instant Play! I can now watch every episode of TNG, DS9, and Voyager back to back and in chronological order! YAY!!! YAY!!! YAYAYAYAYAY!!!!! (did I say "Yay?") NYAN!

  • Keat an d I got a used PS3. It's good and all, but we think the main laser went out and we have to get it replaced. TBD

  • CJ is here for the weekend. Is there a word for "insane insanity to the insane max?" If so, that's what we (me, Keat, and CJ) are together. I don't think there is ever a dull or boring moment.

  • On the same topic, CJ watched "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" yesterday. Let's just say that he almost died laughing. Finally! A Mel Brooks comedy he likes!

  • On a similar topic, I've become a big Cary Elwes fan. I don't know what it is, but he is a natural actor and damn good at it! I mean, Psych, Twister, Men in Tights, Glory, and of course, The Princess Bride, he has a good line-up of fimography credits. And.....

  • I'm not one for Cosplay I used to not be into Cosplay, but after seeing The Princess Bride a few weeks ago, I'm determined to make Cary's The Dread Pirate Roberts outfit. Basically, it'll be double duty: SCA and Conventions. After that's done, I'm going to make/buy Squall's outfit

  • The house is coming along nicely. We just mowed the lawn twice. It takes about an hour, depending on how fast you go. We're almost totally unpacked, and having an attic is nice too



Business:

  • We have a new contract - but I don't know how much things will progress on it since the main contact people aren't being very communicative

  • We hired a new developer! Yay!

  • I'm interviewing a Sales person on tuesday, and with our current relationship with him, it should be nice.

  • We may be hiring another developer. I'm negotiating details now.

  • I'm dealing with a client's security policy that they had to make for one of their clients. It's not looking pretty right now. We have a conference call in a few weeks, and hopefully I don't get my head bitten off. We'll find out.

  • Our office has been a little rearranged. We removed the couch (put it in our house), added a futon sofa (works better), moved my desk to the window, and took down the table. It's certainly more open now.

  • I'm trying to figure out a fiasco about some office keys that were misplaced. Basically, I've contacted two previous employees from '08, and it's been crazy trying to figure out where some missing keys went.

  • I've lost my faith and respect in Parallels. Put it this way: I upgraded my Plesk Control Panel from 7 to 10 (first mistake). I then had to go through all of the configuration files to re-configure the server to work properly. Apparently, instead of editing the main server configuration file, it creates a new one for each edit you make, and they are all titled something like "1300625830.75118100_httpd.include", so trying to find which one was the latest is extremely hard, especially when you are dealing with edits made within seconds of each other instead of minutes. Anyway, I went through Plesk 10 and tried to order a new domain for a client. This sent me to shop.marketplace.parallels.com and told me to login. I logged in with the credentials I had, and it charged me for the domain. I then waited about 24 hours for the global nameservers to catch up, and it turns out that the domain was mis-registered! Apparently, it was registered under my name at Parallels, not my standard domain registrar. So I couldn't go into any control panel and change any of the settings because (after contacting Parallels, Plesk support, my domain registrar/manager, and the reseller's reseller, I can't find $%#@ control panel to correct the nameservers to point to the right server! AAAHHHHHGGGGG!!!!!! [insert Charlie Brown scream here] I'm still talking with the people to try and find a straight answer. So far, it's not going well.



Enough boring details. I'll save the rest for later.

Update: [2011-07-08 07:09pm] After sending a kinda frustrating email to the MyPlesk support, I finally received a straight answer:

I logged in, updated the nameservers, and the switchover happened within hours. Why couldn't I have received this from the beginning.

I especially like the part when it says "...that is absolutely right,...". I feel a little happy inside.

A Day of Fixin' and Mixin'

Pearls Before Swine

I said that I'd make tonight's posting! Now, on to the day's activities: Keat and I woke up around 12 (it felt nice to sleep in), because the maintenance people were supposed to come at 1 to fix a lot of things in the apartment. We didn't actually leave the apartment till about 1:15, because we had to "tidy up" for the maintenance guy(s) (for example: putting the cats and all of their necessary items in the bedroom, etc). However, before we left, I found out that the sink was backed up! I ran the dishwasher last night and I was expecting the dishes to be clean when I woke up. Instead, both sinks were 90% filled with water and dirty dishes. I checked under the sink and didn't see anything. I removed the dirty dishes, put them aside, and ran the disposal. However, instead of sucking down the water, it sucked it down from 1 sink and spewed it into the other sink! So much for that method. I then looked below the sink again and removed all of the items under the pipe itself, only to find out that the pipe was leaking! There was a divit in the floor of the cabinet since we moved in, and now I know what caused that. Keat and I made a sign for the maintenance guys before we left to let them know the sink was clogged.

We arrived at the office, and I expected to be there about an hour or so. After replying to emails, checking my reader, and other items, I had a few things on my to-do list for North State (adding text, updating photos, etc). We left around 5 and stopped by Wal-mart (for the 1st time this week! A new record!) and Keat got herself a new MP3 player. We then charged through the traffic on the way home, and realized that with: 1) Friday traffic, 2) 5:00 traffic, and 3) holiday rushes, all of these together created one stressful trip home.

We finally got home and I expected for the maintenance guys to have stopped by (is that grammatically correct? I don't know - it's 2AM!) We checked in and saw the workorder on the counter. The drip pans on the stove were replaced (good), the living room outlet was "working" (tested; not working as expected: bad), fixed the A/C unit to heat up (replaced our thermostat; not expected, but good), and unclogged the sink (good; whew!). The living room outlet seems to have a "maintenance curse" on it or something; it never works for us, but maintenance always says it works and assume we're stupid because it is connected to the light switch, and they think we don't know how to turn it on. After testing it myself and plugging various things into it, I found out that technically it works, but it's loose and that's why nothing will stay on when plugged into it. As for the sink: it turns out that the sink was clogged with a carrot top. What are the odds?

Keat and I also found out a good name for the new service (can't say much) and I bought the domain for it. I had some credit on my VPS refund, and a portion of that paid for the domain. I'm also working on the display point-of-concept for the service, and if things go well, I should have that done after I'm done with this posting. I also created a temp logo for it, which looks really good.

We don't have anything really important planned for the weekend, except for relaxing.

Post-day blog rant

The System

Wow, another late update. Either this week is really busy, or I'm just lazy. I'd like to go with #1. Anyway, here's what happened yesterday:

I watched the Eureka Xmas special, which was pretty good, even for Eureka standards. It was also good to see everyone come together in the end. We also got the result from the Board presentation of the SMDC Expo idea. Guess what: it was pretty much beaten to death. All of the ideas we had (except for the open house) were shot down. But we're not giving up that easily! The whole idea has now been "morphed" into an open-house (only) expo! And it's now scheduled for the spring instead of late winter.

The Client meeting went well. I dropped Keat off at class at 11, then went to the office to set up. I arrived at about 11:10, and the perspective client showed up at 11:15. Glad I got there early. I set up the conference room with a very simple setup (laptop, notepad, chairs, etc), and noticed my laptop was making a "WHIRRRR-CLICK-RRRR-CLICK-RRR-CLICK-RRR-CLICK" noise. Usually, the fan makes a low humming noise, but this was an annoying "CLICK CLICK CLICK" that I couldn't get rid of. I tried to blow out some dust and shake it a bit, and it calmed down a little. When I went outside to get the client and came back in, it was down to its usual hum. Overall, the client meeting went well! She was looking for someone to help her out of an almost-given up situation, and we provided all of the options she needed. Can't wait to get started!

I also added a few subdomains via the Plesk control panel on Wednesday, but they weren't showing up. I was about to contact the support guy again and say "Hey! My subdomains aren't showing up. What's going on?" Instead of losing my temper, I thought about logging into the VPS Control Panel (since I recall having to do a 2-step procedure before), and I added the subdomains that way as well. It seemed like a hassle, but they worked today!

Dr. Lockwood also asked about having dinner sometime. I responded "OK" and asked for a confirmation time. I'm still awaiting a response.

Keat and I were ready to watch the DVD we received from Netflix, but by the time we sat down and attemped to watch it, the PS2 wouldn't play it. After fiddling with it for about 2 minutes or so, I opened it up and saw the DVD was cracked. I mean, a clean, straight crack! Don't know how that happened (honest!), but I notified Netflix and sent it back today.

I'll make sure to post today's post tonight.

PS: According to my tracker on the blog (top right corner), I have also been blogging for 1 month! YAY!

I know not of Yesterday

The System

Well, yesterday had its ups and downs. I never really knew exactly what was going on, but I had a good idea. Aside from waiting on the latest Bleach chapter to come out, I worked on some Fire and Ice updates, some Cove Creek updates, tried to get the North State payment system working (found out I needed to contact their Merchant and put the account in Test mode), replied to some business emails, and napped a bit. For some reason, I couldn't fall into a good sleep on Tuesday night. So I napped when I got to the office until Keat called. She went to lunch with her class, and then went back to her other classes, and I napped. After a restful nap, I got back to work, trying to catch up and get things going. I know it seems pretty vague, but that's how yesterday seemed: vague. We were also waiting to hear back from the Radio station about a hosting gig and the SMDC Board about the Expo idea. I'll explain more tonight.

Aside from the typical business stuff, I also tried to work on some more subdomains. I added them, but they aren't showing up. Don't quite know what that's about.

Subdomain trouble again

The System

Before I get started, I wanted to share this major issue that I just discovered. I was standing downstairs in our apartment today, and I thought I felt a slight breeze. After trying to narrow down the source of the mysterious wind, I found out that the door wasn't completely sealed! There was a constant gust of freezing air blowing in from between the door and the frame. Keat and I jury-rigged a light insulation system made from blankets (see below). Afterwards, I also found out that a breeze was also coming in from the window next to the door! Somehow, the sliding window frame wasn't flush with the wall, so that was poorly insulated as well! The make-shift insulator worked well, but not perfect. Hopefully, we won't be paying high electricity bills again if this works (and as soon as it gets fixed - Keat sent an email to the landlord yesterday).

On to Today:
Today wasn't much better with the subdomain issues. As you may (or may not know), I contacted the support guy yesterday with a concern about the subdomains. I received an email at about 1:30 on Thursday:

Again, notice the lack of grammar. Additionally, after I stopped the old server and requested a service termination (which I assumed was the correct course of action), I now have to fill out a stupid info form for canceling my account. I don't have an issue with forms, but this form was anything BUT professional:

Aside from being very unprofessional, the "Password" field was just a plan text field! Talk about lack of security. You would think they would at least make the Password field a password-type field!

After the old account was canceled (it took about 10 minutes after I sent the cancelation request), I received a response email at about 2:30 talking about the subdomains. My email had a dig request for the subdomains, and it showed all of the subdomains pointing to the old IP address. This is the response I received:

Thank you for your email. They all point to the new IP now. What i did 
 
was that i logged on the old control panel, go to each sub domains, and
 
switch the 'subscription' to the new one. DNS record will automatically 
 
pick up the new ones on the new VPS account. Let us know if you have any
 
question.

Again, notice the lack of grammar.

I then sent another email saying that the subdomains are pointing to "Apache Test Pages." This basically meant that the subdomains were pointing to the correct server, but to the wrong location. For those of you who know the Plesk system, it seemed that the web server was ignoring the custom file locations in httpd.include and going back to the original file locations for when the subdomains were created. What a pain! As far as a response....none yet.

Later, I received an automated email saying that my server space was almost used up. At first, I thought, "How can that be possible? I transfered about ~20GB of info from a 30GB server. How can I use up 50GB already?" I didn't really install anything super-large and there wasn't anything added to the domains that was huge. I remembered that I told the control panel to perform a backup, about 2 days ago. I guess it finally got done (and duplicated the whole server, which can easily eat up any remaining space). So I went through and told it to delete it. I think it's still doing it...

Lastly, I don't mind the spotty support service or the server transistion issues, but if there is one thing that bugs me about 3rd party hosting, it's downtime. I subscribe to a free service called Pingdom which pings the web server every minute testing for downtime. Here's the latest result of uptime:

I finally got home, and Keat and I watched American Dad while we ate dinner (gotta love Netflix). After about 4 episodes, we went to bed. So....'Nite!

Server Issues and Bad Day

Well, the server file transfer is done, but there are a few DNS issues with the subdomains and the uptime. It is getting very confusing. That is why this posting is a day late. I'm working with the support guy, but I think either he's getting pissed at me or the server setup is so specifically confusing that it is causing issues.

Garfield

Yesterday had to be one of the worst days I ever had. I'm not quite sure what the issue was that made me have a totally "mad-at-the-world" mood, but I think it had to do with Chi scratching drywall and the Director's Cut newsletter (called "Hello World!"; appropriate, right?) I wanted to get out on the 1st. I stayed up till 5am writing it, then got about 3 hours of sleep before Keat had to be at school. I'm normally good on 3 hours of sleep, but I don't think that helped at all.

I woke up grumpy, which has been unusual since high school (when Mom would come in and say "Time to get up." "Time to get up." "Time to get up." / Me: "OKAAAAAAYYY!!!"). I was pretty much mad the whole day. Couldn't really work much. I got some emails sent, some files updated, and tried to work on the subdomain issue.

Keat didn't have her phone, so I left around 2:15 to pick her up. After I picked her up, it turned out that she was in a sour mood as well. We went to Wendy's to get some food, and tried to act civily. I think it helped a little, because we had some food and started joking around. Keat and I felt better, so we went to Ingles and got a copy of The Mountaineer, which contained an article about us. How exciting!

We came back to the office, I clipped the article out and posted it, and things got better. Keat approved the newsletter, took a nap, and I sent it off. I sent off a few more emails and tried to work on the subdomain issue again - no luck. Couldn't figure out the issue.

Keat had class at 7:30, so she got up and left. I watched some American Dad and tried to clam down some more. Keat got done with class and we went home, played with the cats, and went to sleep. There goes Wednesday.

Server transfer almost done!

A lot happened today, but I want to keep this short so I can recreate it if need be; the server transfer is almost done and the last thing to be transfered is the shadowdev.com core. That pretty much means 85% of the files on the web server (including this subdomain). I can't wait till the transfer is done so this headache can be over.

I already vented to Keat, so the majority of my 'rant' is over. However, I'll sum it up for quick-reading purposes. I:
- added Hugh to the Advisor list on the Shadow Dev sites and sent out a short PR announcing his Advisor-ship;
- sent Dad the Alpaca information, only to find out that he already met the people and he's not pursuing that course of action;
- called Progress Energy and found out that the payment station didn't scan the account number on my check right and charged me 13.50 + my payment, but the operator was very friendly and helped me through the process, including paying online and avoiding the stupid $4.95 online processing fee;
- called the Auto shop and finally rescheduled my tire rod appointment that I had to postpone 2 weeks ago; added ALL of the email forwarding rules to the new server;
- finally figured out the stupid open_basedir issue on the new server and solved that (long story short: had to manually edit the new httpd.conf files one-by-one); semi-caught up on Eureka Season 4 (ep. 5-9, until 1-4 become available and/or episodes 10-20 air);
- manually updated ALL of the databases on the new server (the support guy was transferring them one-by-one, which was taking forever, so I exported the info out of phpMyAdmin on the old server and imported it on the new server; est. time of competition: 1 hr);
- found out that the article that The Mountaineer came to us for back at the beginning of the month is scheduled to be published on Wednesday (yay!);
- talked to Allan about the SMDC Expo event and got some of the 'minor' details out of the way;
- re-croned the new server to perform the "reminder" cron job every minute of every day (after I realized that the main php module was in a different location;
- loaded Seesmic on my laptop, which is easier to manage than TweetDeck, but I would like the integrated desktop feature for constant notifications of mentions and replies;
- stopped by the Waynesville Rec center and took a tour - really like it and may join in the next few months;
- browsed the "Internets" and found a lot of good stuff: duly tweeted
- and of course, did my standard stuff for every day (check reader, reply to email, etc);
- then came home and did some last-minute cleaning before the inspection tomorrow
....And that was my Monday.

Can't wait to see what Tuesday brings up!
